We are a family owned, private practice with a deep history of serving Bastrop and the surrounding communities. Our practice was founded by Dr. Neil Gurwitz in downtown Bastrop in 1951. Over the years the office titles have changed but the care and familiarity remains. We are happy to continue the tradition of quality care to Bastrop and look forward to many more years of local service.

Dr. Matthew Schukar is a dedicated and earnest doctor who has been providing care in Texas for several years. After growing up in Lincoln, Nebraska, he migrated to Texas to attend Baylor University. There he obtained a bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry. Shortly after he obtained a doctorate in optometry from Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr. Schukar has been practicing optometry for more than 8 years, and has been the proud owner of Texas Vision Clinic since 2018. He is a certified Therapeutic Optometrist and Optometric Glaucoma Specialist. Dr. Schukar has a keen eye for visual clarity, ocular health and providing modern medical care in an optometric setting. In his spare time, he likes to spend time with his wife, two daughters and two dogs, build guitar amplifiers, expand his vinyl record collection, and work on wood projects in the garage.

Dr. James Spinuzza received his undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania State University and went on to receive his Doctor of Optometry degree from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Spinuzza enjoys many dimensions of eye care but is particularly interested in solving issues pertaining to eyestrain and reading. Outside of the practice, he loves spending time with his wife, the outdoors, reading, cooking, and playing guitar.

Dr. Joan Cmar received her bachelor’s in biology from the Ohio State University and her doctor of optometry from the Ohio State College of Optometry. She has a passion for providing quality eye care and preserving vision and eye health. In her free time, she loves baking and cooking for others, attending concerts, traveling on roadtrips, hiking, and playing tennis.
PRACTICE MANAGER
Neil Montes has been in practice administration and clinical management for optometry and ophthalmology since 2008. He was born and raised in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Neil received degrees from New Mexico State University and Pacific University College of Optometry. He is ABO (American Board of Opticianry) certified. Neil is passionate about helping people and strives to consistently deliver excellent eyecare. In his spare time, Neil enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys.
